THE BELLE ÉPOQUE OF JULES CHÉRET

FROM POSTERS TO DÉCOR

Jules Chéret is a prolific poster designer who contributes to the modernisation of Paris during the belle époque. His use of colour and undulating lines turn the urban landscape upside down. At the time, the artistic and literary milieus are fascinated by Chéret's bright and cheerful style. He sparks the important poster movement later developed by famous artists like Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha.

This retrospective is a collaboration between Les Arts Décoratifs Paris, the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich and the Museum Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi and reveals the wealth of Chéret's poster production and puts forward his lesser known talents of decorator and painter. Furniture, painted decorative objects, mural prints, wallpaper, portraits and drawings are displayed alongside circus, theatre and commercial posters, books covers, cards and promotional material.
